Community Integration Following Traumatic Brain Injury.

This book is an addition to the recent spate of attention currently being given to traumatic brain injury Traumatic brain injury (TBI), traumatic injuries to the brain, also called intracranial injury, or simply head injury, occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury and is one of two subsets of acquired brain  issues. It joins the publication of the revised text of Rosenthal and Griffith, Rehabilitation of the Adult and Child with Traumatic Brain Injury, and of Lehr's Psychological Management of Traumatic Brain Injuries in Children and Adolescents. Unlike these two books, which manifest depth as well as scope, the articles in Community Integration are, for the most part, surveys of current thinking in treatment and in service delivery.

The purpose of this book is to facilitate efforts to extend the continuum of care by presenting critical issues in community integration. These issues are explored by multidisciplinary rehabilitation specialists who present diverse topics, but who also share the philosophy that long-term rehabilitation for persons with traumatic brain injury is a long-term process and is most efficacious if the interdisciplinary approach, including the family and client, is used.

I have no argument with this philosophy, but its reiteration, combined with the physical therapy and occupational therapy contributions that attempt to flesh out the philosophy, seem to "reinvent the wheel (jargon) reinvent the wheel - To design or implement a tool equivalent to an existing one or part of one, with the implication that doing so is silly or a waste of time. This is often a valid criticism. ." Beginning in the 1940s and expanding through the 1950s, rehabilitation work and writings of people such as Howard Rusk, Frank Krusen, Edith Lawton, and Mary Eleanor Brown expressed the philosophy and many of the strategies that are described here.
