Community Innovation Award.

For the last five years, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students have been using technology to help their communities while they compete for the Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation. Teams of three to four students, with the aid of a coach, attack a problem in their local communities using knowledge gleaned from their studies of science and technology. Consulting with community leaders and mentors, the participants write a proposal based on their research of the problem and its possible solutions. Ten finalist teams and their coaches win an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World's Epcot Center to compete for $64,000 in grants and U.S. savings bonds. Deadline: January 31, 2001.
