Community Formation in the Early Church and in the Church Today.Community Formation in the Early Church and in the Church Today. Edited by Richard N. Longenecker (Hendrickson, $19.95). If you are interested in thoughtful historical and theological reflection on the church but are tired of endless debates on bishops and satis est, this volume of essays would be a good place to go. The essays are from various Protestant perspectives, but that does not exclude a wideness of vision. The subject is what has usually been labeled "church order," but the focus is not narrowly on ministry and offices but on all aspects of leadership and structure. After a brief introduction by Longenecker that sets this volume in the history of scholarship, there are twelve essays. Three are on the social context of the early church: Greco-Roman associations, various Jewish manifestations of community, and early Christian architecture The factual accuracy of part of this article is disputed. The dispute is about The role of Christian Humanism in Gothic architecture. Please see the relevant discussion on the talk page . Church Architecture from 1180C.E to 1700C. . Four essays on the New Testament deal with Jesus, Paul, Acts, and the Pastoral Epistles Pastoral Epistles: name for the New Testament letters of Timothy and Titus. . Two essays cover leadership structures in the first Christian centuries, in the Latin West and the Greek East The Greek East is a phrase used to define the territories of the Greek-speaking, Orthodox Catholic peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, centered around the Byzantine Empire. . I found the essay by Frances Young The Reverend Frances Young is Emeritus Professor, University of Birmingham, and a Methodist Minister. The volume concludes with three essays on the church today, from an Episcopal, a Presbyterian, and a congregational perspective. One problem is that these latter essays make little attempt to draw on the historical material in the rest of the volume. Although the writers arrive at no consensus, there is a general agreement that the gospel of Christ creates the Christian community, for the purpose of mission. There is also a healthy skepticism about using any reconstructed historical development as in itself normative. Nothing in this volume will resolve current debates among Lutherans about bishops and ministries (in fact, Lutheran perspectives are noticeably absent), but for that very reason these essays may be salutary sal·u·tar·y adj.
