Code Sprint Results in Multiple New Projects for Ingres OpenROAD

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Ingres OpenROAD is heading down a new and improved path with the help of a two-day community event focused on improving the solution. Ingres, the leading provider of open source database management software and pioneer of the New Economics of IT, hosted the fourth annual Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint in Slough, UK, where community members put their collective heads together on new features for Ingres OpenROAD. The event held last week resulted in a number of improvements to the solution that will give developers new tools for writing, testing, and debugging code.

"We had a fantastic sprint in Slough and we accomplished some key objectives," said Joseph Kronk, director of engineering, Ingres. "This code sprint is a great example of why community is so important to open source; we are very impressed with the features they are working on. Projects like the intellisense editor and time stamping of messages will make Ingres OpenROAD even better."

Ingres OpenROAD is a rapid application development and flexible deployment solution that allows developers to quickly build and deploy sophisticated high performance and high availability business applications on a variety of platforms, accessing a broad range of data sources. Attendees of the Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint came from around the world to contribute and begin brand new projects to benefit the solution. Ingres engineers were also present to offer assistance and help with any challenges.

"We had the opportunity to work with the Ingres engineering team to begin some the projects that we need implemented to make our jobs easier. The features we worked on will give developers some much-wanted tools when working with OpenROAD."

Some of the features that were worked on during Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint include:

Frame Editor Dynamic Customization - Community members developed a prototype that allows 4GL programmers to customize the frame editor with a user written 4GL procedure at runtime.

Intellisense Editor - Great progress was made in the research toward beginning a large scale project to integrate an intellisense editor into the OpenROAD workbench.

Trace Window Time Stamping of Messages - Developers worked on a feature to put time stamps on messages to help with the development, debugging, and testing of code.

Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint was attended by community members from the UK, US, Germany, Denmark and Australia. In addition to improving Ingres OpenROAD, the group also discussed ways in which to host Ingres User Association (IUA) meetings and how to run their own code sprints in the future.
