REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 1996--Communication Intelligence Corporation (CIC CIC

) announced today receipt of a phase II research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF NSF - National Science Foundation ). The grant, of approximately $300,000 will extend over an eighteen month period.

The grant will support research and development to extend CIC's existing technologies for on-line handwriting recognition to include Optical Character Recognition optical character recognition (OCR), method for the machine-reading of typeset, typed, and, in some cases, hand-printed letters, numbers, and symbols using optical sensing and a computer.  (OCR OCR

information, and efficient new products that combine on-line handwriting recognition and OCR capabilities. For example, a potential product would enable a person to optically scan a document, and then edit the document in real-time using a pen and digitizer.

The United States Post Office, a major user of advanced OCR systems, has said that: "Significant advancements in OCR technology are needed to bring the read rate (of handwriting) to the desired level," thus indicating the need for commercial products in this area.

"We believe that any resulting technology will result in a better OCR recognizer, and be an important component in making computers more friendly and easier to use for ordinary people. This new research and development is a natural extension of CIC's current technologies, and is aimed at opening up new markets for CIC," said Dr. John Ostrem, CIC's Vice President of Research and Development.
