"For each new virus outbreak, Anti-Virus vendors need up to 24 hours to release a new signature: this is the enormous window of vulnerability," said Commtouch President and Chief Technology Officer Amir Lev lev-,

. "Our new offering will close this window. It is the ideal complement to existing AV solutions."

Detecting a new outbreak, developing a new signature, testing its effectiveness in-house, and distributing it to subscribers are all time-consuming processes. Harmful viruses such as MyDoom reach their peak and infect infect /in·fect/ (in-fekt´)

Protecting Subscribers in Real-Time

Commtouch's new solution will protect subscribers from the first minutes of a new outbreak. "This is precisely the complement AV vendors need to complete their offerings," says Lev. "We immediately identify messages that are part of massive outbreaks, without wasting valuable time in analyzing the virus. Our subscribers are protected in real-time, far before signatures are available."

Beagle Virus Blocked Hours Ahead of Signatures

The new offering has already shown impressive results. Commtouch was the first to block the beagle.av and beagle.aw viruses, which were "in the wild" on October 29. Commtouch first released an AV update to block the virus at 1.26 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, Temps Universel Coordonné) The international time standard (formerly Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT). Zero hours UTC is midnight in Greenwich, England, which is located at 0 degrees longitude.  -- nine hours ahead of any AV vendor.
