NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Standard & Poor's CreditWire 8/21/97 --Standard & Poor's today placed the claims-paying ability ratings of Commonwealth Land Title and Transnation Title Insurance Companies Group members on CreditWatch with developing implications (see list below), following the announcement that the group would be acquired by Lawyers Title Corp., the holding company for Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. of Richmond, Va. The proposed merger will match the size and scope of the industry's largest title insurance groups, Chicago Title and Trust Company and First American First American may refer to:
  • First American (comics), A superhero from America's Best Comics
  • First American, a division of the now-defunction Bank of Credit and Commerce International.

The insurance operations include the title operations of Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Co. and Transnation Title Insurance. The company is the country's oldest registered title insurer, writing title insurance for residential and commercial real estate transactions. Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. is the sixth-largest title insurer based on 1996 revenues of $594 million.

Real estate related activity has been strong year to date, with Commonwealth Land Title Group reporting revenues for the six months ending June 30, 1997 of $404 million, which generated excellent pretax earnings of $24 million.
