Commonwealth Games projects on target.


Summary: India's sports minister has insisted the country was on track to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  in New Delhi New Delhi (dĕl`ē), city (1991 pop. 294,149), capital of India and of Delhi state, N central India, on the right bank of the Yamuna River. .

Doubts about India's ability to stage the event have grown since Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell criticised the organising committee in September, seeking an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to salvage salvage, in maritime law, the compensation that the owner must pay for having his vessel or cargo saved from peril, such as shipwreck, fire, or capture by an enemy. In July the government painted a stark picture of construction delays, saying more than half the work needed to be completed in 12 of the 17 projects for the games which are due to take place next year from October 3-14.

The Nehru stadium is scheduled to stage the opening and closing ceremonies for the games, which will be India's first major international sports event since the 1982 Asian Games The Asian Games, also called the Asiad, is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). .
