Commonwealth Games 2002: Swimming: Gold for Goddard.

ENGLAND cast another golden glow over the Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  yesterday.

Stockport teenager James Goddard pulled off the biggest shock of the swimming competition by winning the men's 200m backstroke.

Sarah Price streaked to glory in the women's 100m backstroke and Adam Whitehead in the men's 100m breaststroke. Then the England women triumphed in the 4x200m freestyle final.

Ian Thorpe collected his fourth gold medal when Australia won the 4x200m freestyle final.

In women's judo judo (j`dō), sport of Japanese origin that makes use of the principles of jujitsu, a weaponless system of self-defense. , Samantha Lowe won the Under-70kg final, Simone Callender the Over-78kg and Michelle Rogers the Under-78kg.

Shooting legend Mick Gault n. 1. (Geol.) A series of beds of clay and marl in the South of England, between the upper and lower greensand of the Cretaceous period. , 48, stole the show at Bisley when he completed a hat-trick of golds.

Gault's latest victory came in the men's 50m pistol. And 15-year-old Charlotte Kerwood won a gold inthe women's double trap singles. FULL STORIES: PAGES 58, 59
