Common Footprint for Next-Generation MOSFETs Announced by Motorola and Siliconix.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1996--Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector and TEMIC TEMIC Telecommunications Executive Management Institute of Canada  Semiconductors member Siliconix today announced that they have agreed on a common footprint for their next generation of small-outline MOSFETs.

The new package style, which will meet the JEDEC The division of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) that deals with semiconductor standards (officially, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association of EIA). JEDEC was formed in 1958 when the Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JETEC) split into two Joint Electron Device  specifications representing the EIAJ's SC-59, will be slightly larger than the popular SOT-23. Motorola and Siliconix have agreed on compatible pin-outs, power ratings, package outlines, and dimensions for a common product portfolio to be introduced beginning in the third quarter of 1996.

"With the demand of the market for smaller and smaller packages, the semiconductor industry is quickly reaching the point where the old rules of establishing standard packages no longer apply," said Jim Harnden, Product Marketing Manager at Siliconix. "The keyword today is partnership, and we are delighted to be sharing a joint path to market for these next-generation products with such a strong supplier as Motorola."

The MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) The most popular and widely used type of field effect transistor (see FET). MOSFETs are either NMOS (n-channel) or PMOS (p-channel) transistors, which are fabricated as individually packaged  devices to be released by Motorola and Siliconix in the new package will be aimed at low-voltage applications with limited circuit board space.

"Siliconix has developed considerable experience in the market and applications for low-voltage MOSFETs," said Mike McKean, Strategic Marketing Manager at Motorola. "It is a natural choice for sharing our knowledge of the market for hand-held, battery-operated systems."

Siliconix is a member of TEMIC, the microelectronics enterprise of Daimler-Benz.
