Commodore announces breakthrough in chemical warfare agent disposal.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1996--Commodore Applied Technologies, Inc. (ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) A relational DBMS from Sybase that runs on Windows NT/2000, Linux and a variety of Unix platforms. ASE is a comprehensive and robust data management product with a long history dating back to the late 1980s. :CXI CXI Common X-Windows Interface (Unix)
CXI Color Mixer (Wyron, stage lighting)
) today announced the formation of Teledyne-Commodore, LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.

LLC - Logical Link Control
, a mutually-owned joint venture formed to pursue chemical demilitarization de·mil·i·ta·rize

The joint venture's chemical-warfare destruction technology is based on Commodore's proprietary Solvated Electron Technology (SET). In tests conducted at federally-licensed, independent surety laboratories, the SET process destroyed more than pound quantities (a commercial benchmark) of all U.S. stockpile chemical warfare agents, including mustard (HD), Lewisite lewisite (l`əsīt'), liquid chemical compound used as a poison gas. Like mustard gas and nitrogen mustard, it is a blistering agent; when inhaled, it is a powerful respiratory , and nerve gas (VX and GB).

In other laboratory tests, SET has destroyed solid residues (heels) of chemical-warfare agents, as well decontaminating both metal and plastic surfaces. In addition, SET is the only technology that has successfully decontaminated charcoal filters that have been exposed to agents.

The SET Process

SET is a proprietary process that uses readily available materials in conventional, off-the-shelf chemical hardware to destroy chemical agents. The waste products are highly stable industrial salts. No detectable offgas is produced by the below-room-temperature process, and the overall "dry" waste stream is the smallest of any chemical agent destruction process.

The joint venture, Teledyne-Commodore, LLC, will be operated by Teledyne, Inc.'s wholly owned subsidiary Wholly Owned Subsidiary

A subsidiary whose parent company owns 100% of its common stock.

Paul E. Hannesson, President of Commodore, noted, "Commodore's commitment to the protection of the environment in hazardous waste disposal has been confirmed by our participation in the development of the SET-based chemical weapon agent destruction systems. This breakthrough technology is a safe and cost-effective way to augment the Army's baseline program. Commodore is proud that its technology will be applied to eliminate an entire class of weaponry from world arsenals."

Under the terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention Noun 1. Chemical Weapons Convention - a global treaty banning the production or acquisition or stockpiling or transfer or use of chemical weapons  currently in the process of being ratified internationally, world stockpiles of chemical weapons agents are scheduled for destruction within ten years following final ratification. The United States, however, has unilaterally committed to the destruction of 30,000 tons of chemical weapons agents by the year 2004. Teledyne and Commodore estimate that the international market for chemical weapons disposal and related services is in excess of $80 billion over the next 10 to 20 years.

In March 1996, Commodore's SET process received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's first-ever nationwide, portable, non-thermal permit for the destruction of PCBs. In April, at a special White House Conference, the Clinton Administration announced that Commodore's SET process is one of three environmental remediation technologies in its Rapid Commercialization Initiative (RCI RCI Royal Caribbean International
RCI Radio Canada International
RCI Rehabilitation Council of India
RCI Residential Communities Initiative
RCI Roof Consultants Institute
RCI Remote Control Interface

). The program is designed to streamline the process of moving U.S.-based environmental services and technologies to national and international markets. It is expected to abolish government red tape so that agencies like the Departments of Energy and Defense can realize cost-effective efficiency and step up the implementation of state-of-the-art technology.
