Commissioner candidates winnowed to whopping 17.

Byline: Randi Bjornstad The Register-Guard

They whittled a little Wednesday, but at the end of the exercise, Lane County commissioners still had 17 people on their list of potential replacements for Tom Lininger, who leaves the board next month.

Under a selection strategy designed by Chairman Peter Sorenson, each commissioner chose one candidate from a list of 22 applicants. They repeated the process several times until none of the commissioners wanted to add any more names to the list.

Originally, 23 people applied for the post, but one didn't live within the East Lane District, which Lininger represents. The former federal prosecutor announced even before taking office in January that he would leave the board in August to take a faculty position at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  Law School.

Next Tuesday, each candidate who survived the cut will make a 10-minute, uninterrupted presentation to the commissioners that includes personal qualifications and an analysis of the issues facing the county.

The group includes three local mayors - from Coburg, Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. Commissioner Bobby Green came back with a quick jab.

"But I decided to move away from that."

After the commissioners hear from the candidates next week, they will decide whether to invite a smaller group back for a more in-depth interview, Sorenson said.

Whoever wins appointment will serve through 2004. The position will appear on the ballot the same year, and the winner of that contest will serve the remainder of Lininger's term through 2006.
