Commissioner Lininger resigns from county board.

Byline: Randi Bjornstad The Register-Guard

In a three-line letter of resignation, Lane County Commissioner Tom Lininger gave notice Tuesday that he will leave the board on Aug. 15.

"I regret that this resignation is necessary," Lininger said in his note to Chairman Peter Sorenson. "I have enjoyed serving with you and the other commissioners since January."

Late last week, Lininger said he had hoped to delay his departure from Lane County politics to the end of the year or even longer, but the university decided that it could not accommodate his request.

"I'm sure the line will be as long as your arm," Commissioner Bill Dwyer said. "But I'm going to miss (Lininger). The guy's got some real good public policy instincts, and I admire that."

What he'll look for in a replacement will be someone who takes the job seriously, doesn't kowtow to money or power, cares about the region, adheres neither to a strict growth or no-growth policy "and who can even say `no' to Mom - under the appropriate circumstances," Dwyer said.

But given Lininger's frequent position as the swing vote on the five-member board - with Peter Sorenson and Dwyer often voting on one side of an issue and Bobby Green and Anna Morrison on the other - Dwyer acknowledged that the commissioners may find it difficult to select a replacement. If that happens, the position will remain vacant until the 2004 elections.

County Administrator Bill Van Vactor said the commissioners probably will begin discussing the appointment process as soon as next week.
