Recycling arrangements for commercial owners and tenants in New York City New York City: see New York, city.
New York City

City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S.

The city will accept post-collection sorting of commercial materials, but signs must be posted indicating what will be post-sorted.

The rules cover any waste that is collected by private carters and will affect most commercial establishments. The materials which must be recycled beginning Friday, Nov. 29, cover the mandatory recycling of high-grade office paper, corrugated cardboard Noun 1. corrugated cardboard - cardboard with corrugations (can be glued to flat cardboard on one or both sides)

Other materials for recycling will be added at six-month intervals. Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, glass bottles and jars will be included in commercial recycling on May 29, 1992. Plastic containers will be recycled beginning Nov. 29, 1992. Film plastic, such as shrink wrap

Commercial tenants and businesses may sort the materials themselves, which is called source separation, or have the private garbage carter administer post-collection separation, or come up with a combination of the two.

To comply with the law and to avoid fines a conspicuous sign must be prominently displayed stating which materials are source separated and which are post-separated, as well as stating the collection day for source separated recyclables. If there is no source separation, the sign should state it is all post collection sorted.

Tenants should also be notified of any impending im·pend

Non-compliance with recycling requirements will subject the owner to a $25 fine for the first violation, $50 for the second, $100 for the third and $500 and up for the fourth violation in six months. In certain instances, the rules state, persistent offenders can be fined on a per-bag basis up to $10,000.

The law also gives the city the right to inspect and fine the private waste collectors.
