EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

COMMERCIAL interior design firms operating in Los Angeles County reported significant growth for 2006. This is the third consecutive year of growth for the industry. Local billings grew to $140 million, up $13 million or 11 percent, from the previous year.

The growth of the firms is partially a reflection of the growth of their clients. As clients move into larger offices or open new ones, design firms see a larger workload.

The numbers of projects have increased in both size and scope as projects in the pipeline move into the building phase. Numerous firms are working on projects valued at $100 million or greater. No. 7 Leo A Daly began work on the 500,000-square-foot renovation of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. The $723 million project calls for renovation of the facility and construction of inline baggage screening facilities.

Overall, the 25 largest interior design firms employ more than 550 people dedicated to commercial interior design work in L.A. County.

GENSLER

ARCHITECTURAL giant Gensler is the commercial interior design firm doing the most business in L.A. County. The San Francisco-based firm reported commercial design revenues of $24.3 million locally for 2006, up $3.2 million compared with the previous year.

"We continue to have larger scale projects," said Barbara Dunn, principal. "The entertainment industry has picked up and professional services firms are in a robust mode."

The firm completed work on Creative Artists Agency's new headquarters in the 2000 Avenue of the Stars building in Century City and has started planning for William Morris Agency's headquarters. Gensler is also doing work for several studios, including DreamWorks Animation SKG, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Paramount.

"Paramount is doing a fun neighborhood coffee shop concept," said Dunn.

For Sony, the project is much larger. It consists of two office buildings, a parking structure and digital studios on its Culver City lot.

For law firms, Gensler sees work as firms grow and open new offices. Dunn nots that many East Coast firms open offices on the West Coast while local firms such as Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP expand internationally. Gensler will design that firm's next office, which will open in Dubai. One of Gensler's largest projects is 300,000 square feet of office space for Latham & Watkins.
