Commercial interior design firms: ranked by 2005 L.A. county billings.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY COMMERCIAL interior design firms reported growth for the second consecutive year after a downturn. Billings at the 25 largest firms increased to $130 million, up $14 million or 12 percent over the previous year. A total of 20 firms reported 2005 L.A. County billings equal to or greater than their 2004 totals. Interiors firms provide services to a wide array of clients locally. Gensler continues to lead the list with $21 million in local revenues, more than double No. 2 HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates. No. 3 HLW HLW - Herz Lungen Wiederbelebung (German: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) HLW - High Level Waste HLW - High Low Water (same as LW neaps) International fell one spot after reporting $9.5 million in local revenues, down 5 percent from the previous year. No. 4 WWCOT WWCOT - Whisker Wall Coated Open Tubular Column reported the largest increase in local revenues. The Santa Monica-based firm reported 2005 revenues for interior design services of $8.7 million, up $1.9 million or 28 percent compared with 2004. CNI Design Inc., No. 21 last year, was acquired by architecture firm Perkins + Will. The firm, which reported $1.8 million in L.A. County revenues for 2004, had existed for 18 years before merging into Perkins' L.A. office. The 25 largest interior design firms employ more than 550 people dedicated to commercial interior design in L.A. County. PACESETTER GENSLER THE San Francisco-based architectural giant remained the largest commercial interior design firm doing business in Los Angeles County, reporting local billings of $21.1 million, up $1.4 million or 7 percent compared with 2004. Despite rapidly escalating construction costs, the firm has seen an increase locally in work for newly constructed buildings while renovations have held steady. "We're finding that we're being brought in at the earliest stages to help develop a real estate strategy," said Barbara Dunn, Gensler principal for the firm's interiors practice. "A well designed workplace will influence the financial health of a company." Gensler is currently designing projects for a diverse group of L.A. clients including Creative Artists Association headquarters in Century City, the Ritz-Carlton branded hotel at L.A. Live and offices for Latham & Watkins LLP, Yahoo, the Port of Long Beach and Herbalife. "The entertainment industry was quiet for a couple of years, but has picked up," Dunn said. "We've done work for major studios including Sony and Disney." As local companies expand nationally relationships established by Gensler locally have helped generate business for the companies 30 nationwide offices. "Firms with who we have built relationships with in L.A. are growing," Dunn said. "We are doing work with clients in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Canada."
