Commercial & industrial contractors: ranked by 2005 billings for work performed in L.A. County.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 25 largest commercial and industrial contractors in L.A. County reported an aggregate $4.3 billion in L.A. County billings for 2005, up $900 million or 26 percent compared with the previous year. Five companies, led by McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., reported billings greater than $300 million, a plateau not reached in 2004. Tutor-Saliba Corp. fell two spots to No. 3 even though billings increased by more than $100 million. Much of the construction is being driven by hospital replacement and renovation projects, which were spurred by AB 1953, a state law passed after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake requiring hospitals to remain operational immediately following a temblor. The largest hospital project locally is the LAC/USC Medical Center. The $500 million construction project is a venture among McCarthy, No. 5 Clark Construction Group LLC and No. 24 Hunt Construction Group. Other major local projects include schools, office buildings and condominiums. Overall, the 25 largest contractors had contracts for $11.5 billion of work in L.A. County and $58 billion nationwide as of Dec. 31, 2005. THE PACESETTER McCARTHY BUILDING COS. MCCARTHY Building Cos. tops this year's list of the largest commercial and industrial contractors in L.A. County with 2005 billings of $445 million. The firm specializes in construction for health care and education projects. Health care work has increased exponentially due to a state law mandating seismic upgrades passed in the wake of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. "The company originally earmarked health care as a specialty market," said W. Carter Chappell, president of the California region. "It is a significant portion of our business in California." The company is currently working on a multitude of large hospital replacement projects. Major projects include a joint partnership in the $500 million L.A. County/USC Medical Center, the $300 million Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center and Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. It completed work on Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank last year. Other projects are being completed for a number of local school districts, as well as parking lots at USC and Warner Bros. Even though hospitals are required to complete the seismic upgrades by 2008, Chappell expects health care work to remain a significant business segment locally. "When you look at California and consider the population growth, aging demographics and that health care continues to progress, it is still a viable market," he said.
