Commerce One, Inc. (NASDAQ:CMRC), the leader in global e-commerce solutions for business, today announced the appointment of Robert M. Kimmitt as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chief Operating Officer, effective immediately. In the newly created role of COO, Mr. Kimmitt is responsible for company operations including finance, legal, engineering and human resources. He will also chair the Board of Commerce One Europe. He reports to Mark Hoffman, Chairman, President and CEO.

Mr. Kimmitt, 52, comes to Commerce One from a distinguished career in international law, finance and government. A partner in the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler &Pickering, he has specialized in international transactions in regulated industries, especially defense, aerospace, telecommunications and financial services. Previously, from 1993 to 1997, Kimmitt served as managing director of Lehman Brothers, based in New York and Washington.

Prior to joining Lehman Brothers, Mr. Kimmitt held a series of high-level government posts, serving as U.S. Ambassador to Germany (1991-1993), Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (1989-1991), General Counsel to the U.S. Treasury Department (1985-1987), and Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1983-1985).

He also served an extended combat tour in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade (1970-1971).
