Prior to joining Commerce One, Satterthwaite served as research director for Gartner Group's Electronic Commerce and Extranet Application service, with expertise business-to-business electronic commerce applications. Prior to joining Gartner Group, Satterthwaite spent 15 years at IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , most recently in the company's Internet division where he was responsible for product development and marketing for web application servers and electronic commerce tools.

Before joining Commerce One, Shih was a research director with Gartner Group's E-Business Transformation services. He joined Gartner Group from Netscape Communications Corp., where he led the architecture, design, and development of a variety of e-commerce applications.
