Derwent Derwent (dûr`wənt), river, c.60 mi (100 km) long, rising in the Pennines, Derbyshire, central England, and flowing SE past Derby to the River Trent. Reservoirs on its headwaters supply water to the cities of the Midlands., AB--Living Water College in Derwent, Alberta, is a commendable new Catholic college. This school specializes in training artists, dramatists, filmmakers, musicians, and writers, in addition to providing a liberal arts liberal arts, term originally used to designate the arts or studies suited to freemen. It was applied in the Middle Ages to seven branches of learning, the trivium of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, and the quadrivium of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. The study of the trivium led to the Bachelor of Arts degree, and the quadrivium to the Master of Arts. academic program in the "great books."
