service providers an opportunity to ready their networks for V.92.

The V.92 Hardware Readiness Trade-Up Program allows North American service providers to upgrade their hardware to the latest industry standard for dial-up modem technology and earn cash rebates of up to $8,640 per chassis. Service providers simply need to trade in existing remote access concentrators and access switches and upgrade to the Total Control(R) 1000 Enhanced Data System from CommWorks.

The rebate program is open to Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

and competitive local exchange carriers in the United State and Canada. The program continues through Feb. 22, 2002.

Service providers who upgrade to V.92 can offer their subscribers more features for their dial-up connection. The V.92 modem standard adds new features to V.90 modems. V.90 is the protocol that the International Telecommunications Union See ITU.

(body, standard) International Telecommunications Union - (ITU) ITU-T, the telecommunication standardisation sector of ITU, is responsible for making technical recommendations about telephone and data (including fax) communications systems for PTTs and suppliers.

Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks. ) established to standardize 56K modems. Key features of the V.92 standard include:
-- Quick connect, which approximates the "always on" connection of broadband
access solutions by enabling dial-up modems to complete a connection to a
service provider much faster than with V.90-only technology.

-- Modem-on-hold, which emulates the combined voice and data capabilities of
broadband modems by giving users the convenience of being able to accept an
incoming phone call during an Internet session without losing the dial-up
connection.

-- Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) Upstream, which increases the speed at which a
user can send information to a network - up to 48,000 bits per second, compared
to 31,200 bits per second with earlier technology. This is a significant
advantage for remote-connectivity applications involving large file transfers
and e-mail attachments.
