The band provides a musical window into the vibrant, almost medieval, culture of old Transylvania.

On this tour, the band includes Istvan Jambor and Levente Mezei on violin, Ferenc Mezei and Ferenc Jambor on kontra (chord viola) and Matyas Csanyi on bass. The band's repertoire is broad, because the group performs for Hungarian, Romanian, Gypsy and Saxon villagers over a large area of Transylvania.

Two professional dancers, Nora Kertesz and Andras Szallosi, will be featured in dances of Szaszcsavas and other regions of Transylvania.

The Osiris Piano Trio, from the Netherlands, will open the Chamber Music Series at 8 p.m. Thursday in Beall Hall. Reserved-seat tickets range from $12 to $27. They're available in advance from the Hult Center (682-5000) or from the ticket office at the Erb Memorial Union (346-4363).

In keeping with the series' theme this year, "Chamber Music with a Twist," patrons are invited to dress casually and come to a pre-concert birthday party and art sale to celebrate the series' 35th season.

Birthday cake and beverages will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Room 178 of the music school, and 60 music-related sketches by professional illustrator Elaine Hodges will be on display. Proceeds from the art sale will benefit the music school's building campaign and the Chamber Music Series.

Professor Robert Hurwitz will offer some audience-friendly insights about the evening's program in a pre-concert talk at 7:15 p.m.
