Coming to Disrupt Your Christmas... Universal Interactive Studios Ships Disruptor for the Sony PlayStation.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 1996--Universal Interactive Studios (UIS (graphics, programming) UIS - A VMS graphics programming interface package for VAXstations. ) today announced Disruptor, their award- winning first-person action game for the Sony PlayStation Sony Playstation - Playstation , has shipped and is now available in stores.

Disruptor recently captured the "Best First Person Shooter" award from Ultra Game Players magazine, was featured as one of "15 great PlayStation games List of Playstation games can refer to:
  • List of PlayStation 1 games
  • List of PlayStation 2 games
  • List of PlayStation 3 games
  • List of PlayStation Portable games
" in the December issue of Next Generation, and gaming enthusiast magazine PS Extreme told readers, "...Disruptor is what your PlayStation was meant to play."

Disruptor marks the first title that UIS will publish for the Sony PlayStation game console See video game console. . "Through our close ties with Universal Studios, UIS has been able to combine the skill and talent of the title's development team, Insomniac Games Insomniac Games is an independent US video game developer founded in 1994 that has released award-winning hits for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 for 12 years. They created the first three Spyro the Dragon games, Disruptor, and the Ratchet & Clank , with Hollywood expertise in production design, music, sound-effects and film production," said UIS Chairman, Rob Biniaz.

"The result is a vivid, 3-D graphical experience that allows players to step into the near future to battle an assortment of intense enemies in visually rich and stunning environments throughout the solar system solar system, the sun and the surrounding planets, natural satellites, dwarf planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that are bound by its gravity. The sun is by far the most massive part of the solar system, containing almost 99.9% of the system's total mass. ," he added.

Breakthrough Gameplay

Console-style gameplay takes center stage in Disruptor, a first- person game that is not a conversion from a PC title. Disruptor has been designed from the start for a console system and console players who want immediate gameplay gratification. In addition to being optimized for the PlayStation hardware and controls, Disruptor's gameplay is designed to challenge players skill and strategy, not their patience.

Disruptor consists of 13 dramatically different levels, featuring 20 distinct environments. If players can survive the first three training mission levels, they will progress into vivid and striking parts of the Solar System, populated with dangerous -- and often bizarre -- human, mutant and robot enemies. There are also confrontations where players fight less tangible enemies, such as the nightmares in their own minds.

All gameplay is intensified by an interactive music score that shifts in real-time based on surroundings and enemy encounters, heightening the suspense.

Strategic Psionic Weapons

In addition to nine powerful, physical weapons such as the Anti-matter Blaster, Phase Repeater and Lock-on Cannon, players are able to develop and master additional "psionic" powers. These weapons of the mind can be used for self-healing, shielding and draining the energy from opponents as well as killing them.

Psionics add a greater element of challenge to the game because players will have to rely not only on quick reflexes and superb weapon abilities, but on their tactics and strategy as well.

The Disruptor Story

In Disruptor, players take on the role of a recent recruit to the LightStormers, the most elite military group within Earth's New Solar Government. All LightStormers have pledged to protect this dominion at any cost, defending it against a myriad of known and unknown adversaries, including renegades and terrorists.

Possessing the latest in high-tech weaponry, and being the only people in the Solar System with psionic mind-power, they are equipped to unleash incredible amounts of firepower to fight over 20 different enemies of the New Solar Government. Through the game's 13 missions, the player is drawn into ever-increasing danger as the evolving story criss-crosses the Solar System and Earth's surface Noun 1. Along the way, players will uncover clues that will eventually lead to the biggest challenge ... including trying to identify who is really on their side!

The "Hollywood Synergy" Behind Disruptor

Disruptor marks the first UIS title that has truly utilized Hollywood resources to enhance game development. "Our goal in designing a game for this genre is to create an experience unlike any previously available in terms of visual richness, compelling gameplay, and emotional content," said game producer, Michael John.

In addition to the game's developer, Insomniac Games, UIS recruited a well-known production designer, Catherine Hardwicke, to conceptualize con·cep·tu·al·ize
