Eisner's primary goal is "to consider the unique aesthetics aesthetics (ĕsthĕt`ĭks), the branch of philosophy that is concerned with the nature of art and the criteria of artistic judgment.  of sequential art as a means of creative expression, a distinct discipline, an art and literary form ..." He lays out the various components like imagery, the frame, timing, etc. in crisp prose and a wealth of descriptive drawings, which demonstrate all the points being made including the relationship of writing to visual design. Middle school students will particularly value the insights concerning their "favorite literary objects"--comic, books. They should be primed to take that very small step over to a broader involvement with the all-book illustration of which the picture-book is a prime category.
