An upcoming musical by Actors Cabaret cabaret

Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret probably originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions.

What can audiences expect to see? And see? Director Joe Zingo won't reveal anything. "I'm not going to tell you whether we're going to go 'the full monty,' '' he said with a laugh.

Truth is, it's not that important, Zingo said. It's what's inside that counts. "None of the characters in the show are supposed to have a Chippendales-type body," Zingo said. "The whole purpose of the show is to point out that the individual is more important than the process. The process of deciding to do the stripping is more important than the act of stripping."

Compared to the movie, the musical goes more deeply into the relationships between the husbands and their wives. The production portrays bodies - all shapes, sizes and colors - in a positive way that is "fun and wholesome whole·some

 about how the musical will treat nudity. The company doesn't recommend "The Full Monty" for young children, but Zingo encouraged parents to use their discretion.

The company needs 13 men, eight women and a chorus. Those auditioning should be strong singers and bring a short Broadway-style song to perform. The company also needs stagehands and help with costumes, lighting and other elements. The musical runs under two hours.

The auditions start at 6:30 p.m. at Actors Cabaret, 996 Willamette St. The musical runs May 5-27 at Actors Cabaret; tickets will cost $15 to $17. Call 683-4368. The company also will stage the musical at the Hult Center June 2-4; tickets will cost $18 to $22. Call 682-5000.
