Comedian Lenny gong for Othello; THEATRE.

LENNY Henry has won a prestigious outstanding newcomer award for his role as Shakespeare's Othello.

Better known as a TV comic, Lenny confirmed his transition to serious actor after scooping the coveted gong at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

He took on the role in February, having been persuaded to tread the boards while recording a BBC Radio 4 series on the playwright.

Lenny, who is married to Dawn French, picked up the accolade after more than 30 years in showbusiness.

Lenny, whose previous acting experience was in a nativity play as a youngster, told the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards ceremony: "I must be the oldest newcomer there has ever been - which means there is hope for Bruce Forsyth's King Lear."
