Come & see our heroin crisis, Mary; DRUGS.Byline: OLIVIA KELLEHER LORD Mayor of Cork The Lord Mayor of Cork is the symbolic head of the local government in the city of Cork in the Republic of Ireland. The first record of the office (as Mayor of Cork) is in a charter granted to the city by Edward II in 1318. Dara Murphy wants the Health Minister to see for herself the heroin crisis gripping his city. He has made drug abuse his No1 priority after up to eight people died in the last three months. Cllr Murphy said: "Mary Harney Mary Harney (Irish: Máire Ní Áirne; born 11 March, 1953) is an Irish politician and the leader of the Progressive Democrats.[1] is in charge of the health service in this country and I think we need to get a good strong sense she is taking ownership of our problem." The Mayor extended a personal invitation to Ms Harney to visit him in City Hall for a briefing on the crisis. The number of heroin detections in the city rose from four in 2004 to 159 last year. |
