Comdisco To Provide $56 Million Equipment Management Program for Micronas Intermetall's Semiconductor Facility in Freiburg, Germany.

, with a global equipment management program valued at $56 million (Deutsch Mark 101 million) for their German subsidiary, Micronas Intermetall GmbH..

Comdisco, through its electronics division, will supply Micronas Intermetall with various semiconductor manufacturing and test equipment and asset management services to needed to convert Micronas Intermetall's Freiburg, Germany plant for a major upgrade in capability. The upgrade will provide Micronas Intermetall with ability to achieve greater throughput and produce a wider range of different product applications.

About 60 percent of the equipment is already installed in the facility, with the remaining 40 percent to be phased in over the next six months.

Herman said that equipment management involves assessing an organization's current technology and its use, determining its value and anticipated life. It also takes into account the impact of market demands, technological advancements, and pricing fluctuations.

"Comdisco combined knowledge of the German market with specific experience and know-how in the semiconductor industry. The result was a custom-tailored solution for our needs."

The Micronas Intermetall plant is currently equipped with technology to produce 5-inch wafers at .8 micron. With the new equipment, the plant will be capable of producing 6-inch wafers at .5 micron. The facility makes mixed signal analog chips for consumer products, primarily for telecommunications and automotive uses.
