Comdisco's Ready Y2K Offers Companies a Contingency Plan as Millennium Nears; New Program Offers Safety Net for Unanticipated Year 2000-Related Disasters.

ROSEMONT, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1998--Comdisco Continuity Services today announced its Ready Y2K See Y2K problem and Y2K compliant.

related to an unexpected Year 2000 problem Year 2000 problem, Y2K problem, or millennium bug, in computer science, a design flaw in the hardware or software of a computer that caused erroneous results when working with dates beyond Dec. 31, 1999. . The Ready Y2K Program puts preventive measures in place so should a company that has resolved the date-change problem still suffer an unforeseen Year 2000 failure, it will have a contingency plan A plan involving suitable backups, immediate actions and longer term measures for responding to computer emergencies such as attacks or accidental disasters. Contingency plans are part of business resumption planning.  to help recover operations.

Companies enrolled in the program submit information on their technology platforms and Year 2000 test validation plans, which Comdisco reviews for their effectiveness. Testing can be conducted internally by the customer or in conjunction with a customer-selected vendor. Additionally, as part of the program, customers must execute their Year 2000 test plan(s) by November 1, 1999, and provide audit certification to Comdisco. There is no charge for the Ready Y2K Program review.

"The Year 2000 date change is not an unanticipated problem," said Allan Graham, senior vice president, Comdisco, "and as such, is not a 'declarable' event under most disaster recovery agreements. However, for companies in the Ready Y2K Program that have demonstrated a concerted effort to resolve their Year 2000 problems and have addressed the issue with their third-party suppliers, any subsequent outage out·age

could be truly unanticipated and therefore a declarable disaster."

Customers participating in the Y2K Ready Program that encounter an unanticipated disaster related to the Year 2000 will have access to Comdisco recovery facilities and resources based on their existing business continuity contracts.

In addition to the Ready Y2K Program, Comdisco also offers Millennium Testing Services (1) to provide customers with the test environments and technology required to conduct all the necessary Year 2000 tests, including:

-- Qualification Tests - to assess the scope of the conversion project and identify where the bulk of the conversion effort lies.

-- Checkpoint (programming) checkpoint - Saving the current state of a program and its data, including intermediate results, to disk or other non-volatile storage, so that if interrupted the program could be restarted at the point at which the last checkpoint occurred.  Tests - that act as status checks throughout the process, allowing customers to test to ensure that code converted in an earlier phase still works when tested in conjunction with code converted at a later stage in the process.

-- Validation Tests - that allow users to test their entire system for Year 2000 compliance once the conversion is complete.

(1) Ready Y2K Program customers can choose to use Millennium Testing Services, however, other testing environments can also be used, including those created by the customer or by other vendors.
