Comdial Starts Shipping Enterprise for Telephony Services Software.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1994--Comdial Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:CMDL CMDL Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory
CMDL Common Mission Data Loader
), announced Wednesday that it has started shipping its new Enterprise for Telephony Services software, a NetWare Loadable Module See NLM.  (NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries. ) which links Comdial's DXP DXP Design Explorer

digital switch with Novell NetWare local area networks (LANs).

According to the announcement by Comdial President and Chief Executive Officer William G. Mustain, "Comdial's successful introduction of this software link is a significant milestone in the achievement of one of our key business objectives -- to establish a leadership position in the rapidly emerging market for Computer Telephony Integration Computer Telephony Integration - Computer Telephone Integration  (CTI (Computer Telephone Integration) Combining data with voice systems in order to enhance telephone services. For example, automatic number identification (ANI) allows a caller's records to be retrieved from the database while the call is routed to the appropriate party. ).

"With this recent innovation, third party software developers can more easily create applications programs for our popular DXP telephone system."

The Enterprise for Telephony Services software is being introduced at UNICOM `94, the annual conference and trade show of the North American Telecommunications Association held in Washington, D.C. from November 2 through November 4.

Enterprise for Telephony Services conforms to "Telephony Server Applications Programming Interface," (TSAPI (Telephony Services API) A telephony programming interface from Novell and AT&T. Based on the international CSTA standard, TSAPI is designed to interface a telephone PBX with a NetWare server to provide interoperability between PCs and telephone equipment. ), an emerging standard which provides third party developers with the ability to write applications software that integrates voice and data capabilities over Novell NetWare LANs. Typically, these applications allow users to perform telephony functions from their personal computers.

Functions such as directory dialing, hold, transfer, conference, and others can be performed by keystroke key·stroke

or mouse. While on a call, users can access customer data bases and use PC based programs. With caller ID capability, caller files can appear on the PC screen even before the call is answered.

Several software packages are available today, primarily to serve broad applications such as processing call center traffic and providing PC access to multiple source messages, including voice mail, E-mail, and fax.

With the advent of TSAPI, which greatly expands the potential market for CTI applications software, it is expected that many more applications packages will become available, serving specific business segments like retail, legal, medical, real estate and others. Since the telephone is a common means of performing business transactions, advances in CTI have the potential to greatly increase productivity and improve customer service.

Comdial's DXP is a digital telephone system serving applications requiring up to 224 combined telephone lines and station ports.

Comdial Corp. is a leading designer, manufacturer, and supplier of a broad range of advanced telecommunications products and systems solutions.
