BRENTWOOD, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2003

Comdata Corporation(R) announced today that it has signed an outsourcing (1) Contracting with outside consultants, software houses or service bureaus to perform systems analysis, programming and datacenter operations. Contrast with insourcing. See netsourcing, ASP, SSP and facilities management.  agreement with Spring City, Pa.-based Scanware, Inc., a provider of automated document scanning services to the trucking industry. The agreement establishes Scanware as the premier provider of driver log processing services for Comdata's Regulatory Compliance Services business unit, resulting in the introduction of automated log capabilities and Web-based log retrieval for Comdata customers.

"This agreement will allow us to serve our customers much faster with an industry-prevalent log scanning partner," said Frank Adelmen, executive vice president, Comdata Transportation Services. "Manually-intensive log processing will immediately be replaced with a more user-friendly, Web-based log processing solution that will reduce or eliminate costs associated with mailing driver logs to Comdata. We look forward to extending the benefits of this partnership to our Regulatory Compliance customers."

Founded in 1991, Scanware, Inc. processes approximately 80,000 driver logs every day via its LogScan(R) and EZLog Machine(R) scanning platforms, currently installed as part of many long-haul trucking company operations. Scanware offerings use optical scanning and handwriting recognition Handwriting recognition is the ability of a computer to receive intelligible handwritten input. The image of the written text may be sensed "off line" from a piece of paper by optical scanning (optical character recognition).  technology to virtually eliminate or drastically reduce manual data entry related to sorting, filing, entering and checking driver logs. In addition, driver logs can be checked for accuracy by downloading Comdata fuel card data directly into Scanware's LogScan system, allowing trucking companies to compare supporting documents to a driver log, print letters with electronic log images and automatically update driver history and related report files.

"Since many Comdata customers currently use Scanware products in-house, we are essentially standardizing our Regulatory Compliance Services offering to meet their needs for faster, more accurate driver log processing," said Adelman. "Besides faster turnaround times (1) In batch processing, the time it takes to receive finished reports after submission of documents or files for processing. In an online environment, turnaround time is the same as response time. , we will now enable our customers to have access to their driver logs over the Internet."

Using the Comdata / Scanware offering, driver logs are scanned, electronically transmitted, processed using LogScan, and transmitted back to the customer within three business days. Storage space for paper-based logs could be eliminated at the customer site, and driver logs can be retrieved, viewed and printed at any time. Using the Internet as a communications channel Also called a "circuit" or "line," it is a pathway over which data are transferred between remote devices. It may refer to the entire physical medium, such as a telephone line, optical fiber, coaxial cable or twisted wire pair, or, it may refer to one of several carrier frequencies , the Scanware system retrieves an actual image of the driver log. The cities and states, as recorded by the driver, are presented in the driver's own handwriting. The hours logged are presented in digitized format. This information can be filed and retrieved on demand, and the system is scalable for any sized fleet.

"We're pleased to be extending our partnership with Comdata," said Bill Tomlinson, president of Scanware, Inc. "Since Comdata is considered the industry standard in driver log processing and transportation support, this agreement will compliment the level of automation and self-service applications A software application that allows a user to obtain information or complete a business transaction on the computer that has traditionally required the help of a human representative. Voice response systems and Web sites are widely used for self-service applications. See kiosk.  Comdata customers already enjoy."
