and NZNO's Gastroenterology Nurses' Section held their annual joint scientific meeting in Hamilton in early November. This meeting was very well attended by medical and nursing staff from around New Zealand. The three-day conference programme was designed to have presentations that both doctors and nurses attended, as well as presentations that were specific to either medicine or nursing.

One hundred and sixty nurses from around the country attended the conference which began with nurses' workshops on hepatitis. The key note nursing speaker was Kathy Bean from the Arlington School of Nursing at the University of Texas. She teaches graduate courses in theory, research and scientific dissemination and has undertaken several research projects relevant to the gastroenterology specialty. They include nurses' spiritual attitudes and perspectives, the nurse endoscopist nurse endoscopist An advanced practice–ie, specialized nurse trained to perform endoscopic examinations–eg, of the lower GI tract. She is the editor of United States-based publication, Gastroenterology Nursing. Her final conference presentation, on writing and publishing, was stimulating. Hopefully nurses who heard it will put pen to paper and provide evidence for their portfolios.

The conference offers a wonderful opportunity for doctors and nurses to see new technology and discuss new techniques with a variety of companies. This can be invaluable to those of us who Like to compare similar products. The gastroenterologist Gastroenterologist

Interest in section growing

With many nurses expressing an interest in joining the section (thanks to NZNO's expressions of interest forms), I hope this conference will continue to grow and thrive. The number of members in the section has grown from 86 Last year to 180 this year.

The conference theme was "GI Jazz" and was well supported by trade companies, who provide some sponsorship for the conference, with some companies also providing awards for paper presentations. Once again, the support we got from trade companies was amazing and I thank them for their continued support. The conference convenors responsible for nursing input, Ann Currie and Julia Cleaver, did a superb job as part of the overall conference organising committee.

I took forward to the next conference which is to be hen in Blenheim in 2006.
