The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is a technical society of professionals in the Canadian minerals, metals, materials and energy industries. It was founded in 1898. In 2006, the organization had 12,000 national members.  (CIM (1) (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing) Integrating office/accounting functions with automated factory systems. Point of sale, billing, machine tool scheduling and supply ordering are part of CIM. ) Sudbury Branch recently hosted the first-ever joint conference of maintenance engineers and mine operators.

The Maintenance Engineering/Mine Operators Conference (ME/MO 2005) took place at Laurentian University Laurentian University, main campus at Sudbury, Ont., Canada; bilingual, coeducational; founded 1960. Among its faculties are those in astronomy, commerce, computer science, education, engineering, law, mathematics, music, native studies, nursing, physics, and social , February 20-24. Each division normally holds its own international conference, usually in a different Canadian centre every two years.

Topics of the more than 80 high-calibre technical papers covered engineering, maintenance, processes, safety and the environment. Inco Sudbury Operation's general manager-mining, Michael Winship, was one of the session chairs.

"This is always the conference for practical miners."

Australian delegate Matthew Dalziel, a mining research coordinator for Amira International, agrees.

"This is all about gathering information and making contacts ... you meet some of the leading experts in the world at important conferences like this one."

More than 400 delegates registered from across Canada and around the world, representing countries such as Australia, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. , Sweden, Norway, Zimbabwe, Iran and several American states.
