 for the next 10 years.

"This contract represents a commitment from a major customer to provide call box service to the community well into the next millennium," said Sebastian Gutierrez, Vice President of CWT. "This contract is of strategic importance because it clearly demonstrates the value our customers place on the services that call boxes provide the motoring public."

"Despite the growth in the number of cellular subscribers, we continue to receive large volumes of calls daily from the call boxes. These calls represent aid to motorists that do not have other means of obtaining assistance. Furthermore, the call boxes provide an exact location of the incident that is being reported, a feature currently not available in the cellular network. The call boxes are an integral part of a larger program to keep traffic on our freeways moving," said Wes Wells, Director of the SAFE Program for MTC. "As we look at the next 10 years we see call boxes playing an important role in our Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) plans. Smart call boxes will see dual duty as telemetry telemetry

Comarco Wireless Technologies is completing a full upgrade of the MTC SAFE call box system. The system, which is 10 years old and originally manufactured by another company is undergoing a complete electronic renovation that will allow the MTC SAFE to take advantage of future improvements in wireless technology. The upgrade was a $2.9 million project that is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
