The patient cannot speak and does not respond to command. for 19 years. While in hospital, he was also diagnosed with brain cancer and predicted never to recover. Sent home from hospital, he was cared for by his wife Gertruda, who always believed he would recover--which he did spontaneously in early June 2007.
