Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

WESTWOOD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16, 2002

Precise Software Solutions (Nasdaq: PRSE PRSE Planx Regionaux Sante Environnement (Regional Environmental Health; France) ), the leader in optimizing customers' business through Application Performance Management, has helped Columbus State University Columbus State University is a four-year public liberal arts university located in Columbus, Georgia. The university was established and is administered by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the  eliminate bottlenecks in its on-line student registration process. Transactions that took five minutes now take barely a few seconds.

"Precise is the ideal solution for our needs. Precise gave me the information I needed to better understand our application and build a more robust infrastructure," said Don Andrae, director of Administrative Computing computing - computer . "We use Precise both proactively and reactively. During peak registration periods, we run it live to gain visibility into the application while our student users are busy setting up their class schedules. During the rest of the year, we rely on Precise as a diagnostic tool to detect and correct any performance problems."

Before installing Precise's software, the university's on-line registration application would grind 1. GRIND - GRaphical INterpretive Display.

to a screeching halt when as many as 500 students would simultaneously be trying to enroll in, add, or drop classes at the beginning of each of the school's three semesters. Because of this, the university quickly realized it needed an Application Performance Management solution to cut down the students' five-minute wait.

"Columbus State's problem illustrates our view that every type of organization - whether a university or a hospital or any other business - can have an application that is critical to its business mission," said Andrew D. Bird, Precise executive vice president of Marketing. "Our mission is to make sure that we can optimize that application to help the organization achieve a business advantage."

Precise was chosen over its competitors by the Faculty Administrative Computer Utilization Committee - a group of faculty and administrators - who found Precise's software easier to understand, plus it had the added bonus of providing recommendations on how to correct the problems it detected.

"After confirming the need for an additional server, Precise pointed me to the remaining causes of my bottleneck A lessening of throughput. It often refers to networks that are overloaded, which is caused by the inability of the hardware and transmission lines to support the traffic. It can also refer to a mismatch inside the computer where slower-speed peripheral buses and devices prevent the CPU ," said Andrae. "Because we have a third-party registration application, we just can't go in and change the code, but, we can notify our vendor about our needs."

For example, during the two academic years since Precise solutions were implemented, Columbus State added Banner's capabilities to pay fees and check grades.

"In the next version of Banner, we'll be going to a completely Web-based enrollment, and we'll have to monitor and manage everything, all the time, every day," said Andrae. "Fortunately, I already have that capability with Precise."
