Columbia is the sixth institution in the Ivy-Plus consortium (which includes the eight Ivies as well as Stanford and MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology ) to license Advance. "The IT directors of these institutions meet twice a year," said Howard Hartig, director of development information services See Information Systems.  at Columbia, and conversations about their respective advancement systems were informative. "I was fairly confident that if Advance could handle the complexities of half the Ivy-Plus, it could handle our needs," he added.

With over 400,000 entity records, 175 end users, and 15 active schools to support, Columbia University needed an advancement system that could manage a complex fundraising environment.

"We wanted a product that provided a real depth of accounting between the wider universe of the institution and the fund," said Mr. Hartig. Columbia licensed Advance, along with Advance Web Access, Advance Web Community, and Special Events, after it became clear that "no other product out there could meet the requirements we had for an advancement system," Mr. Hartig explained.

Mr. Hartig said, "With our new leadership we needed prospect management tools that are flexible enough to handle whatever shape the new fundraising paradigm might take and only Advance met those needs," he explained. As well, SunGard BSR's Special Events module will help Columbia manage the presidential events that are sure to be a cornerstone of new fundraising efforts.

"We're extremely pleased to welcome Columbia University to our user community," said Michiel Westerkamp, president of SunGard BSR. "Clients like Columbia rely on our proven ability to meet their complex institutional requirements. We are eager to work in partnership with them to deliver the best solution for their programs."
