. Columbia has registered the product with the Health Authorities in China under the trade name Advantage-LA.

Under Chinese regulations product launches are in two stages. Within the next six months Advantage-LA will be sold in selected larger cities within China, under agreement with the Health Authorities for what is known as "Trial Sales." Upon successful completion of "Trial Sales," which should be by mid 1999 the Health Authorities should issue a Family Planning Import Sales Certificate allowing distribution of Advantage-LA throughout China.

China offers Columbia an unparalleled opportunity to expand its vaginal contraceptive franchise in a country whose contraceptive needs are inadequately fulfilled, as measured by the number of abortions performed each year. According to government sources, nearly 25 million abortions are performed annually. Effective contraception under the control of women, as would be the case with Advantage-LA, should help reduce this rate.
