Colts roll to lopsided 88-32 win.


The Thurston boys basketball team improved to 3-1 for the season with a convincing 88-32 nonleague win over visiting Crook County Crook County is the name of several counties in the United States:

 on Wednesday.

The Colts were paced by 6-foot-6 senior Shea Washington's 19 points, followed by junior Jay Mayernik with 16 and senior Steve Farley with 10.

Mayernik and Washington also grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Thurston's Eric Orton collected eight points, eight assists and five rebounds.

The Colts led 25-6 after the first period and raced to a 49-15 advantage at halftime. Trevor Abell led Crook County with nine points.

Visiting Marshfield got pins from Tom Wehe at 152 pounds, Casey Wirt at 160 and Lee Mason Lee S. Mason is an English football referee. Thurston got pins from Isaac Schaaf (140), Brett Arand (145) and Luke Barr (152), and won five more matches by forfeit to hand host North Eugene a 51-15 defeat.

In a featured match, No. 5-ranked Robbie Weinhold of Thurston earned a reversal and a three-point near fall with 15 seconds left in the 160-pound match to break a 2-2 tie and defeat No. 14-ranked Kevin Crafton 7-2.

Except for a forfeit to host South Eugene at 130 pounds and a double forfeit at 135, Thurston won every weight class en route to a 66-12 dual meet win over the Axemen.

Pins by Chris Glore at 135 pounds and William Newman at 275 paved the way to Junction City's 42-21 triumph over host Glide in a Sky-Em League-opener for both teams.

In a featured match, top-ranked Erik Neilsen of the Tigers beat No. 10-ranked Lee Sandberg of Glide 4-1. The losing Wildcats got pins by John Blodgett (152), Caulder Lonnie (171) and Garrett Manske (119).
