Colts' playoff finale a splashdown.

Byline: Adam Jude The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - For the Thurston girls soccer team, simply qualifying for the Class 5A state playoffs isn't enough any more.

"We're clearly disappointed," Thurston coach Cliff Schutte said. "I'm disappointed in the outcome; I'm not disappointed in the effort at all. I'm really proud of how they played."

With a constant downpour and a chilly wind, field conditions worsened by the time the girls match began. Puddles formed throughout the field and the ball was often coated in thick mud.

"The field like this is such an equalizer," Crescent Valley coach Andrew Donaldson said.

The match was even for more than 60 minutes.

Lewis turned back numerous Crescent Valley attacks - colliding fiercely with Rose Holdorf at one point - to keep it scoreless at the half.

The Colts (9-3-3), after claiming their first Midwestern League title, had several chances early in the second half to take the lead but didn't finish.

The Raiders (7-5-3), the No. 2 seed from the Mid-Willamette Conference, took advantage.

Holdorf broke the tie with less than 20 minutes remaining when she touched in a rebound rebound (rē´bownd),

"We felt we had a ton of chances in front of the net," Donaldson said. "(The Raiders) just commit to getting numbers forward. They know we're incredibly strong with our defense, and they can take some chances (on offense)."

The Raiders seemed to have an extra step after that.

"The timing of that goal was key," Schutte said. "You've been trying and trying and trying, and all of a sudden you've got 20 minutes to go and you're down. It's tough to come back from that. ...
