Colossal squid captured. (Science).


Forget last year's giant squid. Fishermen in Antarctic waters recently hauled in a 16-foot, 330-pound monster that researchers are calling a colossal squid The Colossal Squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), sometimes called the Antarctic or Giant Cranch Squid, is believed to be the largest squid species. It is the only member of the genus Mesonychoteuthis. .

"This is a very aggressive animal and moves quickly," said Kat Bolstad7, a marine biologist marine biologist

specialist in the biology of marine life.
. "If you fell in the water next to it you would be in big trouble."

It's easy to see why. The female specimen that fishermen hauled in has eight arms, two parrot-like beaks, and two 16-foot tentacles with several razor-sharp, tooth-like hooks. Its eyes--about the size of dinner plates--are the largest of any animal's.

 (enormous) squid had been found intact. Researchers knew about the species mostly from pieces of squid pulled from the stomachs of sperm whales--the squid's main predator (attacker).
