Colossal invasion caught Nazis out.


THE D-Day invasion on June 6 1944 was a meticulously planned operation which wrong-footed the Nazis.

The operation was the largest single-day amphibious invasion of all time, with 160,000 troops landing on June 6. The landings took place along a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. There were around 10,000 Allied casualties, 2,500 deaths.
