This is the coming-of-age memoir of Da Chen, who grew up in China during the dark days of the Cultural Revolution. He endured taunting at school because he was from the "wrong" family (his father was a farmer, rich landlord, and a traditional healer healer Mainstream medicine A romantic synonym for physician. See Traditional healing. ) and he made friends in a gang of "tough kids." Because of the Cultural Revolution his education was spotty, so one of his father's patients taught Da English. Da returned to school and studied for the competitive exams that would earn him college entrance. Daxing reads this book with a decided Chinese accent, appropriate to the book. This abridgment tends to make this a series of factual adventures, with little emotion until the end. Some obscenities.
