 announced that 420 high school student-athletes have been nominated by their schools to participate in the Qwest Leadership Challenge. The student-athletes -- representing a variety of varsity athletic programs from across the state -- will have the opportunity to compete for $18,000 in scholarships through support for their communities and demonstration of their leadership skills.

Now in its third year, the Qwest Leadership Challenge encourages student-athletes to give back to their communities and rewards their efforts with varying levels of scholarships or donations to their community organizations. The students nominated for this year's Qwest Leadership Challenge are asked to complete 30 volunteer hours as part of their programs; upon that achievement, Qwest then donates $250 to the students' organizations. In addition, 10 student-athletes will be selected by a panel as superior performers. The top two - one male and one female - will each receive $5,000 scholarships as recognition for their outstanding work in the community. The remaining eight finalists will each receive $1,000 scholarships.

Students from communities across Colorado were nominated. Project proposals are due Nov. 28, and winners will be announced March 16, 2009.
