Color & gloss measurement in one portable unit.

A new hand-held instrument for quality control of plastics and paints is said to be first of its kind to measure color (45/0[degrees] and sphere geometries) and 60[degrees] gloss simultaneously in compliance with ISO (1) See ISO speed.

, and DIN specifications. The Spectro-guide from Byk-Gardner USA, Columbia, Md., displays color and gloss values together, which makes it easier to clearly determine the cause of a mismatch mismatch

. The company says even highly textured surfaces can be measured with high repeatability. This is attributed to the instrument's ability to provide true circumferential circumferential /cir·cum·fer·en·tial/ (-fer-en´shal) pertaining to a circumference; encircling; peripheral.  illumination illumination, in art

(reportedly unique for a 45/0[degrees] instrument), which eliminates the influence of measurement direction.

Up to 200 standards and 999 sample readings for color and gloss can be saved in the instrument's memory. Each unit comes with Byk-Gardner's Easy-link software, which contains pre-defined QC reports, and allows direct transfer of data to Excel spreadsheets. The battery-powered instrument requires calibrations only every three months. Its patented temperature control is said to allow users to measure color and gloss without worrying about variations in readings due to temperature fluctuations.
