a Regional Historical Museum and dedicate the computer lab he has donated to his ancestral village.

Electricity arrived in Canelas only 18 months ago, and telephone service became available three months ago. "With the computer lab," said Avitia, "the region, particularly school children, will be able to learn computer skills and explore the Internet."

During the week of Feb. 19, the modern world will finally arrive in Canelas. A weeklong series of events -- lectures, essay contests, recitals, walkathons and computer lab classes -- will culminate culminate, in astronomy, the maximum height in the sky reached by a celestial body on a given day. Most unique about the Museum in Canelas is the computer lab containing the genealogy genealogy (jē'nēŏl`əjē, –ăl`–, jĕ–), the study of family lineage. Genealogies have existed since ancient times.  of the region's inhabitants

-- the result of years of research by Avitia.

Canelas will be the only community in Mexico (and perhaps the world) where all the inhabitants' genealogy is mapped out for 300 years of documented history. The genealogy database contains nearly 31,000 individuals all linked together in a single family tree.

Avitia said, "Everyone at one point or another asks, `where am I from?' and `why am I here?' These are more than just metaphysical entreaties. The answers to these questions give us our sense of self, belonging and purpose. I hope that my research can, in part, provide some of the answers."

Perhaps as many as a third of the people in the database are U.S. citizens or otherwise have U.S. connections, including some of the original settlers of Spanish California. The Canelas family tree is only the beginning. Eventually hundreds of thousands of new people will be added to the family tree as it grows to encompass large portions of Mexico and the United States Relations between the United States and Mexico are among the most important and complex that each nation maintains. They are shaped by a mixture of mutual interests, shared problems, and growing interdependence. .

Founded in 1601, Canelas became one of the richest mining communities in the Spanish Empire The Spanish Empire refer to territories formerly colonized by Spain. It was also one of the largest global empire in history.

In the 15th and 16th centuries Spain was in the vanguard of European global exploration and colonial expansion and the opening of trade routes
. However, following Mexican Independence in 1821, Canelas entered a period of decline from which it has yet to emerge. Isolated from the world due to its mountainous location and lack of paved roads, Canelas has remained frozen in time.
