Colombo Asks Iranian Companies to Participate in Reconstruction of Sri Lanka.

 to launch wide-scale activity in projects in the northern parts of Sri Lanka to help the South Asian nation reconstruct the country, Iran's envoy to Colombo announced on Saturday.

Speaking to FNA, Iran's Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mohammad Rahimi Gorji reminded the different aspects of Tehran-Colombo ties, and said that relations between the two Asian nations have experienced a growing trend after reciprocal visits by the two countries' presidents."The projects which have been finalized during (president) Ahmadinejad's visit to Colombo are now nearing the implementation phase," Gorji reminded.He added that the construction of Uma Oya dam and its power plant both financed by Iran would be the first Iranian projects to go online in Sri Lanka.The envoy further pointed to the project for the development of Sapugaskanda oil refinery by Iran, and explained, "The refinery's capacity is 50,000 barrels per day Barrels per day (abbreviated BPD, bbl/d, bpd, bd or b/d) is a measurement used to describe the amount of crude oil (measured in barrels) produced or consumed by an entity in one day.  and Iran is due to increase the refinery's capacity to 100,000 barrel per day."Commenting upon other projects, Gorji announced that the Islamic Republic of Iran is slated to transfer electricity to 1000 villages in the South Asian country.The agreement on the project dubbed as "R&E" to bring electricity to 180,000 families in rural areas, was signed between the managing director of Iranian Sanir Company and the deputy energy minister of Sri Lanka in Colombo in June 2009.Iran and Sri Lanka signed a memorandum of understanding A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a legal document describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action and may not imply a legal commitment.  for export of medicine and medical equipment, the envoy added.Under the deal, signed this month by Iranian and Sri Lankan foreign ministers in the presence of Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapakse, Iran will export medicine and medical equipment to Sri Lanka.The envoy mentioned that Sri Lanka is now in pursuit of development projects for its northern regions."Hence, Colombo is now seeking Iranian companies' participation in reconstruction projects in the northern regions of Sri Lanka," he concluded.
