At the start, the Knowledge Disease Cockpit Application uses a process called Collexis Fingerprinting, identifying and building a weighted list of concepts from text sources. These fingerprints capture the essence of the content of a given article. For this research application, Collexis has fingerprinted all of the abstracts on Pubmed from 1990 through 2006. Pubmed is the National Library of Medicine's index of biomedical research from across the globe.

"The Knowledge Disease Cockpit application gives researchers the ability to correlate data to identify trends and discover relationships between diseases, chemicals, medications and genes in a powerful new way," said William Kirkland, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.
