Colleges had pounds 44m 'left over' FUNDING.


THE six new further education colleges are sitting on a pounds 44million surplus, it was revealed today.

This is twice what they are allowed to hold under public sector guidelines guidelines,

The total was revealed by the Assembly Public Accounts Committee in a report reviewing financial management of the further education sector.

The amount had been even bigger - pounds 54million - but reduced by pounds 10million.

The committee said the money should be returned to be used in other public sector areas needing funds.

Committee chairman Paul Maskey Paul Maskey MLA is a nationalist politician in Northern Ireland. He was elected in 2007 to the Northern Ireland Assembly as a Sinn Féin member for West Belfast.

Since 2001, Maskey has represents Sinn Féin for the Upper Falls Ward on Belfast City Council.
 said they were "concerned" the Employment and Learning Department and colleges had allowed such an amount to lie idle in bank accounts.
