College faculty forum: National Group Piano and Piano Pedegogy Forum.GP3, the National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum, announces its 10th Anniversary biennial meeting Friday and Saturday, August 6-7, 2010, hosted by the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music of the University of Texas at Austin. The two-day event, as in previous gatherings, will concentrate on the specific needs of college and university teachers of group piano and piano pedagogy with the theme of "Retooling Tradition." One topic emphasized will be group piano and piano pedagogy at the community college and small college level. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The GP3 Goals continue to remain the mission of the forum: * Share in concrete ways what we are doing in our day to day teaching. * Discuss how the direction of our field is affecting our approach to professional development, program initiatives and teacher training. * Plan how we must contribute to the course of group piano now and in the coming years. GP3 launched the first meeting at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music as a grassroots forum with an emphasis on the practical aspects of teaching. Purposely hosted by a college or university, participants experienced another institution's group piano lab set-up, along with live teaching demonstrations. The 2006 and 2008 forums were held at the University of Oklahoma with the themes of "The Millennial Student" and "Staying Focused, Staying Fresh." In 2006, GP3 launched a new partnership with MTNA, providing GP3 with greater ease and opportunity in the areas of financial planning, advertising, web hosting and online registration and payment. The association also allowed MTNA, along with GP3, to meet the specific needs of group piano and piano pedagogy professors in the practical way that remains the mission of GP3. The agreement specified that GP3 remain autonomous in matters of current and continuing leadership, mission, programming and focus. The partnership has been an exciting collaboration, allowing both organizations to better meet their goals. All GP3 summary conference reports are published in the online journal, Piano Pedagogy Forum. These are available at www.music.sc.edu/ea/keyboard/ppf in the following volumes: 2008: Issue V. 12, No. 1; 2006: Issue V. 10, No.1; 2004: Issue V.8, No. 1 ; 2002: Issue V. 6, No. 1 ; 2000: Issue V. 5, No. 1. The 2010 GP3 Forum will meet at UT's Butler School of Music, which is housed in the Music Recital Hall. The MRH building contains Bates Recital Hall, the Recital Studio, all rehearsal halls and practice rooms. UT is proud to own more than 300 pianos, including 140 grand pianos. The School of Music also owns two digital keyboard labs with 16 student pianos in each. Each lab is equipped with a Dell computer and ceiling mounted projectors (Mac laptops are available upon request). The entire campus is wireless so bring your laptops with you! Beyond the horizons of UT, conference participants will enjoy Austin, known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," with more Live music venues per capita than Nashville, New York City and Los Angeles. Mark your calendar for August 6-7, 2010, and we'll see you at GP3 in Austin! Barbara Fast, NCTM, is keyboard department chair and professor of piano pedagogy, coordinates the group piano program and teaches graduate and undergraduate piano pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma. She co-founded the National GP3 Forum. |
